The Fall 2010 reading club groups are starting on Monday, September 13 in Fremont (including Centerville), Newark, Union City, Castro Valley, Dublin and Albany. Sign up first to attend these popular conversation groups. Meet new friends and practice together your pronunciation, vocabulary, comprehension and writing between September 13 and December 10. All reading clubs are free.

Adult Basic Education Instructor

Alameda County Library’s Write to Read Adult Literacy Program

Goal: Teach basic adult education courses in Fremont at the Alameda County Library’s community literacy program. Classes concentrate on Reading and Writing, and Spelling and Writing.

Class instruction: 2 hours per class time per week. Classes are in the evening from 6-8 pm.


  1. Instruct a small group of learners (8-15) on basic skills practice such as reading, pre-writing, writing, spelling, and vocabulary building, while encouraging and motivating their ability to improve their skills and help each other as learning peers.
  2. Organize basic adult education lesson plans for a 12-15 week courses.
  3. Compile best students’ writing for inclusion in a program anthology.
  4. Maintain accurate records of participant’s attendance and progress.
  5. Provide teacher’s feedback for students’ future educational needs.
  6. Ability to create a community of learners that is participatory, and highly conducive to learning.


Join a vibrant and growing literacy program in Southern Alameda County that focuses on small group learning and peer education. Class sessions are from September to December, and January to May.

Candidate must provide a resume and must have experience in teaching adult basic education courses for at least two years. This is not an ESL class. Candidate must have computer skills and a track record of using multiple modes of learning to work with underserved, culturally diverse adult populations.

Candidate must be fluent in English, a good listener, patient, organized and creative in order to motivate adult learners to move beyond their learning challenges.  An adult education credential and knowledge of critical pedagogy is preferred, but not required. Additional classes may be assigned depending on need.  Summer sessions may be available. The compensation is $50 per instructional hour.

Proof of auto liability insurance is required by the library.

Start date is September 14, 2010. Interviews will start on the week of August 23rd.

The Write to Read Adult Literacy Fall 2010 session starts on September 13. An expanded offering of classes, computer labs, tutoring, life skills and job-seeking classes for adult literacy learners are available at more library sites than ever – Fremont, Centerville, Newark, Union City, Castro Valley, Dublin, Albany and at community sites including Mercy Housing Apartments in Ashland.

Classes include basic skills in reading, writing, spelling, coversation practice for second language learners, and life skills and job seeking skills. Computer labs for literacy students will continue at Fremont’s Van Doorn Room, and at Mercy Housing locations. Please refer participants to the literacy program by completing a referral formlocated at your information desk (red literacy folder) or by calling Rachel with the learner’s name and phone number so we can call them back.
