Adult Basic Education Instructor

Alameda County Library

Goal: Teach basic adult education courses at the Alameda County Library’s adult literacy program. Class concentrates on Reading, fluency, comprehension, decoding skills and participatory/peer support. Class schedule is January 22 to May 7.

Class instruction: 2 hours per class time per week during the evening from 6-8 pm at the Union City library branch.



  1. Instruct a small group of learners (8-10) on basic reading skills practice encompassing phonemic awareness, alphabetics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension (from NIFL) while encouraging and motivating student’s ability to help each other as learning peers.
  2. Organize basic adult education lesson plans for a 12-15 week courses.
  3. Compile best students’ writing for inclusion in a program anthology for our 30th Anniversary.
  4. Maintain accurate records of participant’s attendance and progress.
  5. Provide teacher’s feedback for students’ future educational needs.
  6. Ability to create a community of learners that is participatory, and highly conducive to learning.

Candidate must provide a resume, two references and must have experience in teaching adult basic education courses for at least two years. This is not an ESL class. Candidate must have computer skills and a track record of using multiple modes of learning to work with underserved, culturally diverse adult populations.

Candidate must be fluent in American English, a good listener, patient, organized and creative in order to motivate adult learners to move beyond their learning challenges.  An adult education credential, reading specialist background and knowledge of critical pedagogy is preferred, but not required. Additional classes may be assigned depending on need.  Summer sessions may be available. The compensation is $50 per instructional hour.

Proof of auto liability insurance is required by the library.

Deadline for resumes and references is January 6th at 5 p.m. Candidate information will be reviewed as we receive them. The best candidates will be selected on a first send basis.
